EU lawmakers and member states have reached a provisional agreement on stricter toy safety rules aimed at better protecting children from harmful chemicals and online marketplace risks.

A key feature of the agreement reached on Thursday is the introduction of a digital product passport, required for all toys sold within the EU.

The passport will provide safety and warning information accessible via tools like QR codes, allowing consumers and customs authorities to verify compliance more easily.

The new rules also aim to ban the use of certain harmful substances, including PFAS chemicals, which can accumulate in the environment and the human body.

Biozides will only be allowed in toys specifically intended for outdoor use.

The deal still requires formal approval by both the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.
