UN marks International Day of Human Space Flight

GENEVA (ALETIHAD)

The United Nations (UN) sets to celebrate the “International Day of Human Space Flight” on Saturday (April 12), marking the beginning of the mankind space era. 

The UN stated on Friday that the story began with the General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/65/271 of April 7, 2011, declared April 12 as the “International Day of Human Space Flight” to commemorate each year the beginning of space era for mankind internationally.

The UN reaffirmed the important contribution of space science and technology to achieving sustainable development goals, increasing the well-being of states, countries, and people worldwide, and ensuring the realisation of their aspiration to maintain outer space for peaceful purposes. 

Notably, the first human space flight, carried out by Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet Union citizen, was on April 12, 1961. This remarkable event opened the horizon for space exploration for the benefit of all humanity.

Additionally, the General Assembly expressed its deep conviction in humanity’s common interest in promoting and expanding the exploration and use of outer space as the province if all humankind and in continuing efforts to extend to all countries the benefits derived to all countries.
