Microsoft is laying off several thousand employees as part of a new round of job cuts affecting less than 3% of its global workforce, the company said on Tuesday.
While no specific figure was disclosed, Microsoft employed approximately 228,000 people as of June 2024, including 126,000 in the US. A 3% reduction would equate to roughly 6,800 jobs.
This latest move follows an earlier round of lay-offs in early 2023, when Microsoft slashed about 10,000 positions.
Like many major tech firms, Microsoft significantly expanded its workforce during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, the company is shifting focus and investing heavily in infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI).
For the fiscal year ending in June, Microsoft has earmarked around $80 billion for AI-related data centres.
