An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck south-east of the Greek holiday island of Crete at midday on Tuesday.
The quake lasted several seconds and was clearly felt on the island, according to the news channel ERTnews, which cited the Institute Geodynamics in Athens.
The epicentre was only about 10 kilometres beneath the seabed. The fire brigade initially reported no damage or injuries. There was no widespread panic amongst the population, according to reports.
Earlier in the morning, there had been a 5.8-magnitude earthquake off the west coast of Turkey, in this case with the epicentre located some 60 kilometres below the seabed. 69 people were injured after jumping out of windows in panic.
