The collapse of the healthcare system poses a grave threat to the lives of children in the Gaza Strip, said Kazim Abu Khalaf, the spokesperson for UNICEF in Palestine.

According to the organisation’s official website, Abu Khalaf stated in a press briefing on Wednesday that children are facing immense challenges due to the ongoing war, emphasising that no other place in the world records such a high number of child casualties on a daily basis.

He noted that since October 7,2023, an average of 27 children have been killed each day. When injuries are included, the daily toll rises to 83 child casualties over the span of 20 months.

Abu Khalaf explained that children are among the most affected by the famine gripping the Gaza Strip, with tens of thousands of children registered as in need of treatment for severe acute malnutrition.

Preliminary statistics, he added, indicate that over 40,000 children have become orphans, with the number expected to increase.

He stressed that children in Gaza will require many years to recover, not only from physical injuries but also from the profound psychological and emotional trauma they have suffered.
