The Israeli military said on Friday that it had begun intercepting the first wave of drones launched by Iran in retaliation for a major overnight airstrike targeting Tehran's nuclear programme.
The drones are being intercepted outside Israel's borders, a military spokesman said. According to Israeli media reports, the interception is taking place over Israel's neighbouring countries.
The drones that are not intercepted could reportedly reach Israel within about an hour.
Israel launched a large-scale overnight airstrike on Iran, targeting more than 100 sites with around 200 fighter jets, according to an Israeli military spokesperson.
The operation reportedly included strikes on military and nuclear-related sites across Iran and killed senior military commanders and scientists.
In response, Iran launched more than 100 drones towards Israel, with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that Israel must expect "harsh punishment."
