YOUSEF AL ARABI (ABU DHABI)
ADNOC inaugurated the artificial intelligence (AI) for Sustainability Centre in partnership with the Chief Sustainability Officers Network (CSOs) and IBM. Ibrahim Al Zaabi, Chief Sustainability Officer at ADNOC Group, announced the launch during the World Sustainability Forum, highlighting the initiative's goal to foster startups developing AI systems aimed at accelerating sustainable development.
The digital platform will present ideas from startups, focusing on solutions applicable in the UAE and the Arab region. Al Zaabi noted that ADNOC realised Dh1.84 billion ($500 million) in commercial value last year by deploying over 30 advanced AI tools across the energy sector, from field operations to corporate decision-making.
These implementations have helped reduce up to one million tons of carbon dioxide emissions between 2022 and 2023, equivalent to removing about 200,000 gasoline-powered cars from the roads.
ADNOC also aims to enhance national human resources, positioning Abu Dhabi and the UAE as leaders in AI-driven sustainable development. The UAE has underscored sustainability as a top priority, extending the Year of Sustainability and launching initiatives in AI.
The World Sustainability Forum, organised by ADNOC in collaboration with the New York Stock Exchange and the CSO Network, gathered leaders, CEOs, and sustainability experts to discuss the latest in sustainability technologies, AI's role in climate action, and opportunities to measure climate footprints. This forum builds on the achievements of the first World Sustainability Forum held during COP28, supporting global climate action goals.
Al Zaabi highlighted the increased participation in this year's forum, with over 460 participants compared to 85 in the previous edition. The forum will continue discussions based on the historic UAE agreement at COP28 and explore AI's role in achieving sustainable development goals across social, economic, and environmental sectors.
