A series of earthquakes measuring up to magnitude-4.7 have shaken northern Euboea, Greece's second-largest island, over the past 24 hours.

The tremors were felt as far away as Athens, some 130 kilometres away.

Greek seismologists said they are closely monitoring the situation and have warned of additional quakes in the coming days.

More than 50 houses have sustained damage in the affected area, according to the To Proto Thema newspaper, citing a local mayor.

"We are likely to see more earthquakes of magnitude 4 to 5 in the coming days," said Efthymios Lekkas, president of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization of Greece, speaking to ERTNews.

"This pattern mirrors previous seismic activity in the same region."

Seismologist Akis Tselentis of the University of Athens echoed the warning in a social media post, suggesting a possible upper magnitude of 5.5 and urging caution, particularly for residents living in older buildings.
