Since the onset of the crisis in Sudan, the UAE has made significant efforts to support Sudanese refugees through healthcare and relief initiatives. The UAE’s total aid for Sudan in the last decade alone is $3.5 billion, with $400 million in aid since 2023. In February, the UAE committed an additional $200 million in humanitarian funding.
Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE recently established three field hospitals- two in Chad and one in South Sudan.
These hospitals feature departments specialising in paediatrics, gynaecology, obstetrics, orthopedics, general surgery, and internal medicine. Additionally, mobile clinics have been deployed to serve nearby areas.
The UAE contributed $30 million to UN agencies assisting Sudan’s neighbours. It allocated $70 million to support organisations operating in Sudan, including $25 million to the World Food Programme and $20 million to the UNHCR.
In September, the UAE announced the allocation of $10.25 million to support women affected by the crisis, with funds distributed to various UN agencies.
These efforts reflect the UAE’s commitment to a comprehensive humanitarian response, providing aid across multiple sectors to benefit the most vulnerable populations, both within Sudan and among refugees in neighbouring countries.
The UAE has invested in Sudan for over five decades, with massive funding for agriculture and clean water. It has also supported the economy through investments, and has provided jobs for the Sudanese people. The thriving Sudanese community in the UAE is a testament to the strong ties between the two countries.
