ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from entering Abu Dhabi Island via Al Maqta Bridge from June 16, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) has announced.
In a post on X, the ITC – also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility – said the decision was taken to ensure smooth traffic flow. It advised heavy vehicle drivers to use the alternative route via Mussafah Bridge to access Abu Dhabi Island.
Constructed in 1968, Al Maqta Bridge was the first permanent crossing connecting Abu Dhabi Island to the UAE mainland, replacing earlier tidal causeways. The bridge marked the beginning of Abu Dhabi’s transformation from a small coastal settlement into a thriving capital.
The Mussafah Bridge, situated approximately two kilometres west of Al Maqta Bridge, was constructed in the late 1970s (1976–1978). Built over the Mussafah Channel, it connects Abu Dhabi Island with the industrial Mussafah area.
